Little Dachshund With Heart Of A Lion Fights To Live After He’s Used As Bait

One Saturday morning, a Dachshund was left in a box outside of a South Florida animal shelter. The poor dog couldn’t even stand up. He was also covered in bite marks. His condition was so extreme that the shelter had to reach out for an emergency rescue.

He had until 4 pm to get picked up by an emergency rescue group or he would be euthanized. The shelter posted an urgent plea on their Facebook page. His wounds were from an obvious cause. A cause that is just too heartbreaking to think about.

The Dachshund Rescue of South Florida arrived at the shelter. A shelter worker brought the volunteers into the back. The poor dog was lying there, motionless, wrapped up in a blanket. They named him Mandela after a fighter who had become a symbol of strength.

The volunteers took his fragile body and put him inside a laundry basket then rushed him to the animal hospital. The staff was prepared for Mandela’s arrival but how can anyone prepare themselves fully for something like this? In the car, on the way to the hospital, Mandela never uttered one complaint. He never cried. He just laid there.

Because of the dog’s wounds and old scars, it was obvious that Mandela was a bait dog.

They got Mandela settled and got to work on caring for his injuries. He was given a medicated bath, oral antibiotics and all his wounds were carefully treated with topical creams. Mandela was also given medicine for pain. He had suffered enough!

In two months, Mandela was transformed. He was still covered in scars but his prognosis was excellent. He had gained weight, his infections were cured. He began to trust people. He was put up for adoption and got a forever home. A family that will NEVER hurt him.

Mandela’s story is one of courage. Even though he was battered and bruised, he had hope. Mandela never gave up! See more of Mandela’s story in the video below!
