Campbell told police he saw a dog chasing the chickens he kept in his backyard. The dog put one of the chickens in his mouth and ran off. Campbell became very upset by this.

“Lonnie said he became angry, so he got into his truck and started chasing the dog. Lonnie said he intended to catch up to the dog and hit it in the head. Lonnie said he wanted to hurt the dog. Lonnie said he was able to catch up to the dog and run his vehicle over the top of it,” per the affidavit. “Lonnie said he knew he probably killed the dog. Lonnie also explained that he lost his temper and shouldn’t have. Lonnie considers his chicken as a pet.”

According to the dog’s owner, he was unable to maintain his hold on the animal, named Kain, and his instincts led him to run after the chickens.

Kain’s body was found about a mile away from Campbell’s home. Campbell ran the dog down by leaving the main road and chasing him through brush and gravel near railroad tracks.

The chicken that Campbell felt the dog killed was fine. It is alive and was discovered near his property.
