Animal Control Officer Shoots Chihuahua Hit By Car To Save The County Money

Tommy Lewis is in a state of disbelief after learning the details of how his beloved dog, a Chihuahua named Abigail, died.

The 9-year-old dog was discovered in a dumpster after being run over by a vehicle and then fatally shot.

Most disturbing is the person who shot her and left her body behind like trash is the county’s Animal Control Officer, David Woods.

A man named Lawrence Trageser heads up the Spencer County WatchDog group in Kentucky. He is the person who found Abigail’s remains and reported it to authorities.

It all started when Abigail went missing from the farm on which she lives with her family. Her owners waiting patiently for her return, as their dogs are generally outside. They say it was unusual for Abigail not to return home.

A good Samaritan found Abigail on the road, apparently struck by a car. She was alive, lifted her head, and looked around. Lewis says Abigail should have been taken to a hospital for her injuries.

“I believe in my heart that if they had taken her to Blue Pearl (a veterinary hospital), she would be at home with us today,” Lewis shared.

Instead, Spencer County Animal Control Officer David Woods shot the dog dead and tossed her body in a bag in a dumpster. According to Kentucky state law, euthanasia by gunshot is banned unless the animal is suffering from any injuries.

Woods admits he shot the dog so the county would save on medical costs of treating the animal. Many members of the community are up in arms and want answers. As of this writing, four magistrates want Woods fired for his actions.

Judge John Riley stands by Woods though he “understands the optics of this is horrible.” Riley admits there is no policy in place for situations such as this and that Woods had no formal training on how to handle a dog like Abigail.

Sadly, Abigail’s body was hauled away by a garbage truck before the Woods family could gain control of her remains.

More about the case and the community’s reaction can be seen in the video below.
