Dog Finds Sick & Orphaned Baby Koala Just Before Fire Burns His Home Down

As the bushfires rip through Australia, leaving devastation in its place, millions of animals are losing their homes and dying.

Hundreds of people, including detection dogs, are out in the fire’s path, trying to rescue as many of them as possible.

One little Koala was rushed to Koala Hospital Port Macquarie after he was found all alone by a detection dog. The poor joey had an advanced fungal infection, which left him without most of the hair on his tiny face.

Hospital staff believes that his mother was either sick, or that she removed him from her pouch and abandoned him due to his condition.

Keli was also very underweight, weighing in at just 275 grams. But what matters most is that he is now safe and out of harm’s way from the fires.

Hospital staff vowed to get him better, and Keli has already made significant progress. Today, he weighs 1 kg, and after receiving treatment, his fungal infection has subsided, and his fur started growing back.

Once he reaches 2.5 kg in weight, he will spend some time in the hospital’s “dehumanizing trees,” to get ready to be released back into the wild.

The hospital says they will not release him until the cooler months, when the fires have completely diminished.

According to the World Wildlife Fund, 1.25 billion animals may have been killed directly or indirectly by the Australian wildfires, including nearly 25,000 koalas.
