Horse Attends Owner’s Funeral, Catches His Scent And Breaks Down In Final Goodbye

A horse named Sereno meant the world to his 34-year-old owner Wagner Lima. They had a bond that was truly special and had been the closest of friends for many years.

When Lima died in a motorcycle accident on New Year’s Day in Brazil, his brother knew that Sereno should be at the funeral.

Lima’s brother, Wando, knew how much the horse meant to him. It was only right that Sereno was there beside Lima’s family and friends to say their goodbyes.

“This horse was everything to him. It was as if the horse knew what was happening and wanted to say goodbye.”

Wando, along with Sereno, led the procession to Lima’s final resting place in Cajazeiras, Brazil. When the horse got close enough to smell Lima’s scent — no one expected what would happen next.

When Sereno approached the casket, it was as if he knew his beloved owner was inside. As soon as he was close enough to smell him, the horse began to sniff all around the coffin. As if Sereno understood what was happening, the horse laid its head on top of the casket to say goodbye.

“As we brought the coffin out at the beginning of the funeral, (Sereno) sounded like he was crying and as if he recognized that his owner was finally leaving him. He pounded the ground with his hooves and kept on whinnying. It was very sad,” Francielio Limiera, a close family friend, told USA Today.

Wando said that Sereno immediately began grieving the loss of his owner. He whimpered during the entire rest of the procession.

Everyone that was attending the funeral could feel Sereno’s sadness — the emotional moment brought many people to tears.

Lima worked as a semi-professional cowboy and Sereno was by his side for over a decade — he will be greatly missed. Wando has lovingly taken in Sereno and will care for the horse in his brother’s honor.

“He had a passion and a great love for him,” says his brother. “Sometimes he would even stop buying things for himself to make sure he could afford to buy horse feed.”

The beautiful story and moment in the video below show how deep a bond can be between a man and their beloved animal.

  1. This is so heartbreaking, so sad. I’m so moved and heart broken to see this horse actually grieving for the loss of his owner. Never doubt that animals don’t feel or grieve or know what’s going on because they do. Xx god bless
