Dog fights off coyotes and protects teen for 2 days after harrowing car crash – wins big award

A dog who saved a seriously injured teen in the wilderness was recently recognized for his heroism. Sako is a King Shepherd who grew up in the close-knit community of Kanaka Bar, British Columbia surrounded by friends and family.

He is particularly close to family member, Joseph Phillips-Garcia and this love would push Sako to go above and beyond to protect the life of a loved one.

One day, Joseph was enjoying a day of picking wild potatoes and fishing in the mountains with his friend, aunt and Sako. When they were returning home, the vehicle went off the road and crashed. Sako and Joseph were the only two survivors.

Joseph was badly hurt, is bone was protruding from his leg. He could barely move and was slipping in and out of consciousness. Sako lay close to Joseph and kept him warm for the two nights and three days they were stranded.

The resourceful dog also helped move wood closer to Joseph so he could make a fire with the lighter he had in his pocket. The dog also helped drag Joseph to a nearby creek so he could drink some water. He also kept him safe from the coyotes and other predatory animals that were circling the crash site.

“We were just falling asleep, and that’s when you hear the first couple of howls,” the teen said. “He got up as soon as he realized their scent was coming closer and closer, and then he just went in. You could hear them just fighting and the bushes rumbling around.”

The pair were rescued 40 hours after they were reported missing. Without Sako, Joseph knows he would not have survived. After learning Sako’s story, Purina inducted him into their 47th Animal Hall of Fame, something the family said will be a memory of a lifetime for them and for everyone who knows Sako.
