4. The idea that dogs only see in black and white is a total myth. They can actually perceive a wide range of colors, although it’s more limited than the spectrum that humans can see.
As human beings, sight is the primary of our five senses. While dogs also have sight (albeit it on a different spectrum) it is scent that is their primary sense. Even though a dog’s brain can be one-tenth the size of a human’s brain, the part that controls smell is 40 times larger than it is in human beings.
Because dogs do not have one area on their eye that is covered with 100% of the cones needed for vision, scientists estimate that their vision is roughly six times as poor as the sight of the average human being.
